Your voice memos, as text you can actually use

Voice memos are the fastest way to capture an idea, a to do list or a meeting summary while you are on the move. The problem is getting that information back out. Scrubbing through a three minute recording to find one detail is slow. Text is easy to skim, search, copy into notes and share.

This free voice memo to text tool turns your recordings into written notes in moments. It works on iPhone, Android and computers, with no app to install. The transcription happens on your own device, so even very personal memos stay private.

How to transcribe a voice memo

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Voice Memos app and tap the recording you want.
  2. Tap the three dots, then Share, then Save to Files.
  3. Open this page in Safari and tap the upload box above. Choose the memo from Files.
  4. Press Transcribe audio and wait for the text to appear.
  5. Tap Copy text and paste it into Notes, Mail or any app.

On Android

  1. Open your recorder app, find the recording and tap Share or Save.
  2. Save it to your Downloads or Files folder.
  3. Open this page in Chrome, tap the upload box and pick the recording.
  4. Press Transcribe audio, then copy or download the text.

On a computer

On a Mac, drag a memo out of the Voice Memos app straight onto the upload box. On Windows, copy the file from your phone with a cable, email or cloud storage, then drop it here.

Why convert voice memos to text?

  • Find things fast. Search your notes for a name, number or idea instead of listening again.
  • Make to do lists. Dictate tasks while driving or walking, then turn them into a checklist.
  • Draft writing on the go. Speak a blog post, a speech or an email, and edit the text later.
  • Keep meeting notes. Record a quick summary after a meeting and paste the text into your team chat.
  • Save memories. Turn voice diaries, family stories and messages from loved ones into written keepsakes.

Features built for memos

  • Reads iPhone M4A files directly. No converting, no extra apps.
  • Automatic punctuation. Sentences come out with full stops, commas and capitals.
  • Record right here. Use the Record audio tab to capture a new memo and transcribe it straight away.
  • Clear English results. English trained Whisper models give more accurate transcripts of English memos.
  • Editable result. Clean up the text, add headings, then copy or download it.

Private voice memo transcription

Voice memos are often personal: health notes, family matters, business ideas or passwords you should not have said out loud. That is why we built this tool to run without uploads. The memo is opened by your browser, transcribed by an AI model on your device, and never sent to us. There is no account, no history and no copy on a server. See our privacy policy for details.

Tips for clearer memo transcripts

  • Hold the phone near your mouth, about 15 to 20 centimetres away, and avoid covering the microphone.
  • Pause between topics. Short pauses help the AI split sentences properly.
  • Say names clearly or spell them out if they are unusual.
  • Speak close to the microphone for the most accurate transcript.

Want to record memos on your computer? Use our online voice recorder to save MP3 files. For other formats, try the audio to text converter, or dictate live with voice typing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an iPhone voice memo to text?

Open Voice Memos, tap the recording, tap the three dots and choose Share, then Save to Files. Open this page in Safari, tap the upload box, pick the file from Files and press Transcribe audio. Your memo is converted on the phone itself.

What file type are iPhone voice memos?

iPhone Voice Memos are saved as M4A files (AAC audio). This tool reads M4A directly, so you do not need to convert the memo first.

Can I transcribe Android voice recordings?

Yes. Android recorder apps usually save M4A, MP3, AAC or OGG files. Share the recording to your Files or Downloads folder, then upload it here. Most Android phones can also open this page in Chrome and transcribe directly.

Can I turn WhatsApp or Telegram voice notes into text?

Yes, if you can save the voice note as a file. WhatsApp and Telegram voice notes are usually OPUS or OGG files, which work in most browsers. Use the Share or Export option in the chat to save the file first.

Is it safe to transcribe personal voice memos here?

Yes. Your memo is never uploaded. The AI model runs in your browser, so the recording and the text stay on your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

Can I record a new memo instead of uploading one?

Yes. Switch to the Record audio tab, press the button and speak. When you press stop, the recording is ready to transcribe straight away.

Why does my iPhone feel warm while transcribing?

The AI model is doing real work on your phone. Short memos finish quickly, but long ones can take a while and use battery. For memos longer than 15 minutes, transcribing on a computer is faster.

Does it add punctuation?

Yes. Whisper adds punctuation and capital letters automatically, so the result reads like normal written text. You can tidy it further in the text box.
