A simple voice recorder that runs in your browser
voicedesktop is a free online voice recorder for quick notes, voice overs, interviews, practice sessions and anything else you want to capture. Open the page, press the green button and start talking. When you are done, you can listen back, trim the start and end, and save the file as MP3 or WAV.
There is no account to create and no app to install. Best of all, the whole recorder runs on your own device. Your voice is never uploaded to a server, so it stays private from the moment you press record.
How to record your voice online
- Press the green record button. Your browser will ask for permission to use the microphone. Click Allow.
- Start speaking. The mint waveform moves as you talk, so you can see that your voice is being picked up. The timer shows how long you have been recording.
- Pause if you need a break. Press the pause button, then press it again to carry on in the same file.
- Stop when you are finished. Press the big button again. Your recording appears as a waveform you can play.
- Trim it if you like. Drag the edges of the green area to cut silence or mistakes from the start and end.
- Download it. Give the file a name and choose Download MP3 or Download WAV. The file saves straight to your device.
Features
- One click recording. No settings to learn. The defaults are tuned for clear speech.
- Pause and resume. Take a breath, check your notes, then continue in the same recording.
- Live waveform. See your voice level as you speak so you know the mic is working.
- Trim before saving. Remove the silence at the start and the click at the end in seconds.
- MP3 and WAV downloads. MP3 for small files that are easy to share, WAV for full quality editing.
- Choose your microphone. Switch between a headset, USB mic or built in mic from the dropdown.
- AI noise reduction. Remove fan hum, hiss, traffic and keyboard noise with RNNoise, an open source AI model that runs on your device. Switch between Off, Standard and Strong while you listen, then download the one you like.
- Works on any device. Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android are all supported.
What people use it for
Because it opens instantly, an online voice recorder is handy whenever you need audio fast. Here are some of the most common uses:
- Voice notes and ideas. Capture a thought before you forget it, then save it to your notes folder.
- Voice overs. Record narration for a video, a slideshow or a YouTube tutorial, then drop the WAV into your editor.
- Podcasts and interviews. Record a quick guest answer or a remote clip without setting up recording software.
- Language practice. Record yourself speaking, listen back and compare your pronunciation.
- Music and singing. Hum a melody or record a practice take. Set noise reduction to Off for the most natural sound, because it is tuned for speech.
- Work and school. Send a spoken update to your team or record a short answer for an online class.
Private by design: your audio never leaves your device
Many online recorders upload your audio to their servers to process it. We do not. voicedesktop uses the recording features that are already built into your browser. The audio goes from your microphone into your browser's memory and then into the file you download. That is it.
This means there is nothing for us to store, sell or lose in a data breach. It also means the recorder keeps working if your internet connection drops after the page has loaded. You can read more in our privacy policy.
Tips for a clear recording
- Get close to the mic. Stay about a hand's width away from a headset or USB mic. With a laptop, sit straight in front of the screen.
- Pick a quiet, soft room. Rooms with curtains, carpets and sofas sound much better than bare kitchens or bathrooms.
- Test first. Not sure your mic is working? Run a quick mic test before an important recording.
- Leave a second of silence. Pause briefly before you start and after you finish. It makes trimming easier.
- Keep the tab open. On phones, keep the screen awake while recording so the browser is not paused.
Turn your recording into text
Need a written copy of what you said? Save your recording, then use our free audio to text converter to transcribe it. It also runs in your browser, so your words stay private. If you would rather type with your voice in real time, try voice typing.
Frequently asked questions
Is this online voice recorder really free?
Yes. The recorder is completely free with no time limits, no watermarks and no signup. The site is supported by a small number of ads, so you never have to pay.
Are my recordings uploaded to a server?
No. Your audio is recorded, played back and converted to MP3 or WAV inside your own browser. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else. When you close the tab, the recording is gone unless you downloaded it.
How long can I record for?
There is no fixed limit. Long recordings are only limited by the free memory on your device. For recordings over an hour, we suggest saving in parts so a browser crash cannot lose your work.
Should I download MP3 or WAV?
Choose MP3 for small files that are easy to share by email or chat. Choose WAV if you want the best possible quality for editing in another app, such as Audacity, GarageBand or Premiere.
Why is my browser asking for microphone permission?
Browsers protect your privacy by asking before any website can use your microphone. Click Allow to start recording. If you blocked it by mistake, click the lock icon in the address bar and change the microphone setting to Allow.
Does the voice recorder work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. It works in Safari on iPhone and iPad, and in Chrome on Android phones and tablets. Keep the screen on while you record, because some phones pause the browser when the screen locks.
Can I cut out the start or end of my recording?
Yes. After you stop recording, drag the edges of the green area on the waveform. Press Play selection to check it, then download. Only the selected part is saved.
How does the noise reduction work?
After you stop recording, an open source AI model called RNNoise cleans the audio on your device. Standard removes steady background noise such as fans, hum and hiss. Strong also silences what is left between your words. You can switch between Off, Standard and Strong while playing to compare, and the download uses the option you pick.
Can I turn my recording into text?
Yes. Download your recording, then open our free Audio to Text converter. It transcribes your file privately in your browser.
